CNN sure knows how to get Black people hyped! When I heard about the series, I was really excited to see it. I saw it... Let's just say I'm not so hyped anymore.
"What it means to be Black in America." That was what the documentary was based on--- or supposed to be. If you saw the series you might understand why a lot of the black community is outraged. Give or take, 70% of the series focused on the negatives of the black community.
In my opinion, the title didn't match the picture painted. Why not call it "The Struggles of Being Black In America, " or something along those lines if they wanted to go that route.

It seems to me that if anyone watching the series had never met a Black person in their life, they might not ever want to. Apparently, we have a ton of unwed mothers and "baby daddy" is all that the fathers will ever be because they don't take care of their responsibilities. We are also a race full of criminals, drug dealers, and drug users. We can't get jobs, we live on food stamps, and a host of other negative things.
Too bad I found myself nodding my head in agreement because its true! Not the truth for all but for far too many!
All of the negativity shown is not all it means to be Black in America and that's where I had a problem with it.
There was much of the series that I couldn't personally relate to because that isn't my reality. Unfortunately, it is the reality of many Blacks in this country.
I hope that CNN pissed us off enough to make a change in the way we allow others to view us but more importantly, the way we view ourselves.

I completely agree with you all the way from Texas. My friends and I were so hyped about this and then.....leeeeet down. I too was sad that most of it was true and I couldn't shake my fist in denial, but this just means we need to do better and stop waiting on our oppressors to liberate us. Black Empowerment!!
